Technical questions about translation

Hello everyone! I would like to contribute to the italian translation of Freeciv, but I'm unsure of what I should do.

I've already subscribed to the Freeciv-i18n mailing list and I've had a look at the 2.6 it.po file (here: http://svn.gna.org/viewcvs/freeciv/bran ... o?view=log) but now I don't really know how to proceed (i've never used svn and I'm not sure about what is the best way to modify the .po file).
I'm quite a noob in these technical things but i would really love to contribute to this beautiful game; could someone explain what should I do?

Have you gone through http://www.freeciv.org/wiki/Translations already? -i18n mailing list is likely to be much better place to ask advice about i18n related issues than this forum. (All the translators should be subscribed to the former when I don't know if any are visiting here)
