Cannot get square tiles (civ1-style) with current freeciv

Hey there,
Haven't played freeciv in a while, I know I used to have the same issue before but always managed to get things right in the past. Apparently not this time though.
So, starting up freeciv 3.2.4 with the gtk client (3.22), starting a new game, opening options panel. Topology checkboxes default status is checked for isometric and unchecked for hexagonal.
If I start the game right away, I get the iso topology, as one would expect. All good.
If I check the hex checkbox (iso checkbox also checked) and start the game, I get isohex topology. Everything's fine.
If I check the hex checkbox, uncheck the iso checkbox and start the game, I get hex topology. Everything's fine here as well.
The problem is, I want the square tiles, overhead topology. So I naturally uncheck the iso checkbox (hex checkbox also unchecked) and start the game. But that keeps bringing me to an iso tileset for some reason I'm not sure about.
What do you need to do in order to play with the overhead tileset in modern freeciv ? Am I the last of the dinosaurs for struggling with this ?
