Should I choose Republic or Democracy for mid-game economic development strategy?

Post by RaymondBarton »

In Freeciv, which government system gives the best economic advantage in the mid-game when playing on a large map with many opponents? I'm testing between Republic and Democracy, but I'm not sure about the specific advantages and disadvantages of each type of government in this environment.

Jumping, sliding, and clinging onto trucks to prevent falls await you in Cluster Rush. In my experience, Democracy tends to offer the best economic advantage in the mid-game on large maps with many opponents. Its trade bonus and low corruption really shine when you've expanded and developed your cities, allowing you to generate massive science and gold output. The downside is the lack of martial law and higher unhappiness, which can be tough if you're still fighting wars. Republic is a solid transitional government with decent trade and more flexibility in war, but it doesn't scale as well economically once your empire gets big. If you're aiming for a tech lead and can manage happiness, Democracy is the way to go.
