Diplomacy

What would you like to see in Freeciv? Do you have a good idea what should be improved or how?

Diplomacy

Post by dagriggstar »

Been playing single player a fair bit lately, I think that the whole "we're allies we expect you to war with us regardless if we are the aggressor or defender" doesn't make for good gameplay. There's no nuance and doesn't seem to be how a human would handle diplomacy. I feel like especially defensive pacts are missing.

So I'm proposing more pacts basically

- General Defensive Pact - The two parties are obligated to go to war with anyone that declares war on either party
- Specific Defensive Pact - The two parties are obligated to go to war with a specific third party if that third party declares war on either of the two original parties
- General Alliance - Basically how alliances are at the moment
- Specific Alliance - A secret alliance where two parties agree to jointly declare war on a third party in 16 turns
After that we could have group dynamics, where for example a three-way alliance decides as a unit (by vote) their diplomatic attitude to others. You can always leave if you aren't happy with a vote result.

Beyond that it would be nice if there was a place I could go to lookup what my ally intends to do. Like if they've said they will honour their alliance with whoever and will declare war on 4 different civilizations it gets a little hard to track.

Upcoming declarations of war or honor-binding treaties will make managing alliances more strategic.
