What am I doing wrong in Trade Routes for Ver 3 and above?

After getting annihilated in early play (like everyone else), I learned that establishing Trade Routes was a key to wealth. I used them for maximum effect up to Version 2.6, and would usually have a ship at Alpha Centauri by about 1820, while all seven AI opponents were building Cruisers.
When I got to Version 3.0 and above, something went "wrong." I build a Caravan in a city (usually at least size 8) with a Marketplace, send it to another city for that size with a Marketplace, easily above my setting of "Minimum distance for trade routes" set at 7. And, after the Caravan arrives at the second city -- nothing happens. In Version 2 I'd get a pop-up window that included the choice [Establish a Trade Route]; in Version 3, I can't even select that from the pull-down menu.
I just can't figure out why something that was easy in Version 2 has become impossible in Version 3.
The attached jpeg shows the Caravan from Athens -- over ten hexes distant -- has arrived in Delphi, but nothing has happened.
Any ideas?

I believe 3.0 changes default ruleset to civ2civ3 from classic in 2.6. You would need to select the classic ruleset to have the same game rules.

Assuming this is the freeciv-3.x default ruleset civ2civ3
Help -> About Current Ruleset:
- Disabled national trade routes: it is still possible to create trade
routes, but only to foreign cities that you are not at war with (trade
routes are canceled when war breaks out). Each city can support a
maximum of 2 trade routes. Removed the one time revenues, and reduced
the ongoing revenues.
My problem was solved!!

Setting Ruleset to "Classical" did, indeed, solve the problem. Thank you both.
I not only CAN play Version 3, Classic Ruleset

And my Space Ship arrived at Alpha Centauri in 1828.
The other Nations attacked me with their Frigates, but my Battleships had little trouble sinking them.

What technique do you use for this strategy?
Looking forward to sharing from you

In a way I "cheat." I create a world where all nations are so spread out that none will attack another for well over 100 turns. Thus, while the other nations are building up armies, I'm developing a huge advantage in science. I also make Smallpox strategy impossible. I grow my cities & science advantage, then start building destroyers when all other nations are building galleons. Even though other nations know I'm building up a huge advantage in wealth & technology, they can't attack me. Before they know what hit them, I'm headed for Alpha Centauri.

I haven't found the bug yet, but it seems to be progressing quite rapidly.

This looks like an incredible map concept! The layout brings a fantastic layer of tactical depth and strategy to the game. Thanks for sharing the file with the community—excited to test it out!
