What makes an AI get better research speed as me? From the start I build a Library and a Temple in every city.

And what makes the AI better in economics? I'm ranked 3rd with 471 M tons. The number one produces 888 M Tons. Twice as much.

I take it better research speed is just the result of better economics - investment to research comes from the trade after all.

If you want to see the difference between your and AI empire (in a game which you no longer want to play "fairly"), you may "/take <ai name>" to take control of the AI empire and to investigate what makes the total trade difference:
- Does it have more cities than you or is the trade/city much higher? If higher trade/city ->
- Does it have higher trade output from worked tiles -> does it work different kind of terrains/specials than you, or do you lack roads from tiles where it would increase trade?
- Does it have more traderoutes, or more productive ones?
- Does it have more trade (&science) related buildings?
- Does it run same form of government as you?
