I'm running an old Intel Mac mini. That Intel vs Silicon problem looks like a tough one. My cursory investigation turned up this -

To build a macOS app that runs on both Intel and Apple silicon, create a universal binary in Xcode by including both the x86_64 and arm64 architectures in your app's executable and frameworks, then test on both platforms to ensure compatibility.

and ay there's the rub - neither of us are using Xcode, we're building from shell scripts. Making official MacOS builds from the source repository would have the same problem. Doing the equivalent work from the shell may be possible, but figuring that out may be beyond my ability.

You may still need the MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET thing to support Silicon Macs running MacOS versions older than what you built on. Would need to test that.

It would be nice to get a confirmation from someone that his works outside "developer's machine" (given failure at Dino's machine). Eventually I'd like to get the build script merged to the source repository - to be part of the official source release, and then make official MacOS builds from future freeciv releases.

Understand statement, but I can just add that I tested my build on 4 separate Macbooks, all of them have Apple Silicon CPU from M1 to M3. And my build will not work on Intelbased Macbooks. It possible to include that but I have no possibility to test it.

Currently we have no (official) builds at all, so having just Apple Silicon ones would be an improvement. Arguably "Apple Silicon supported, might work on Intel Mac" would be even better.

I'm giving the build script a spin in github actions. Noticed this in the logs:

hdiutil: WARNING: 'hdiutil create -volname -format ...' is deprecated. Please use 'diskutil image create from/blank --volumeName --format ...' instead.
