Therein lies the problem: how do I decompress it?

I think you missed my particular point. The AI was set at the easiest level--so I should be ahead of them in everything.

I have the opposite problem where I set the AI players on the easiest level and now they are 3 layers higher than me on research! Not worth playing the game now. Other than that, I love the game!
