New game: Longturn, Civilization 2 ruleset for beginners, starting in a few weeks

Post by Corbeau »

A new game, especially suitable for those acquainted with Civlization 2, will start at Longturn.net in a few weeks.

With years, and even decades, the Longturn rulesets have evolved in order to provide a better multiplayer experience in a one-turn-per-day format and a newcomer, not familiar with details, may feel overwhelmed with both the change of ruleset and the change in concept and pace. This is why we have decided to organise this "gateway" game, to introduce the newcomers to Longturn more gradually. You are all welcome to hop in, meet the crew and join the community that is, effectively, the closest Civ can come to a MMO game.

The game will be as similar to Civ2 experience as possible. However, playing a Longturn variant of Civ required some non-trivial technical changes because a single-player game has a drastically different pace than playing one turn per day. The changes are:

1. Every unit has mostly double Movement Points
2. Settlers are cheaper
3. A lot of Wonders are changed to be Small Wonders (every player can have one)

Also, due to a dynamic nature of the Longturn environment, the game will have a standard Unit Wait Time (UWT) enabled.

You can find a more elaborate explanation for those four changes here.

Planned game start is in the second half of September, but some quick test games (for testing the server and weed out possible ruleset errors) may happen earlier, so if you want a quick test run, drop by. All communication, as always, will happen on our Discord server. You are most welcome to ask for any explanations and clarifications.

Important! To play this, you need to download our Fc21 client here (look under "Assets"). Both 3.0 and 3.1 are fine. Regular Freeciv will not work for this.

In order to install it, you don't need to have admin privileges.

In order to play the game, you have to sign up in advance and, a week before the game starts, confirm participation. The purpose of this is to reduce the number of idlers. If you join our Discord server, you will be regularly notified about the launch status (testing phases that you can participate in, opening the confirmation window and the launch itself).

The joining checklist:
1. Register at Longturn.net
2. Sign up at the official game page
3. Download the Fc21 client (check under "Assets")
4. Confirm participation a few days before the game starts (the option will appear on the official game page, see #2)
