Browser Play Bogs Down to a Crawl

Hi,
I've been a longtime player of FreeCiv web games. But lately, I've been having trouble playing the 2D game on my PC in the Firefox web browser. It starts off pretty snappy, but in a few turns, it slows to just a crawl/delay that it is almost unplayable. And often when it gets to the extreme end of slowness the server times out and any recent progress is lost.
My machine is an old 2011 HP Pavillion, but I don't have any problem using it for normal browsing or even using a program like Openshot. Any suggestions (beyond buying a new computer?). TIA!
