If I feel the grid pattern is too small, how to zoom up? Thanks.

If you are playing on the Web, it is possible to zoom using the browser zoom function.
If you are using the native client, the only way to get bigger tiles is by choosing a new modpack. Freeciv modpack installer lists some "big" tilesets. Once installed, you can switch using (I'm translating from French here, expect somewhat different labels) Game > Options > Local client options > Graphics > Tileset (second option).
