Game 2 - testing game

Post by Corbeau »

Current state of affairs:

250 players overall.

Turn 6

86 active in the last 2 turns

13 idle for 2 turns
18 idle for 3 turns
12 idle for 4 turns
58 idle for 5 turns
... which leaves 63 AIs, can't verify because I don't see them on nations list.

Interesting. It would also be useful to know how the similar numbers are on the Longturn.org games.
The two games there are filled with 34/104 and 0/19 players?

I am considering increasing the turn timeout. I think it could be difficult for most people to commit to playing every day.
What is a more sensible turn timeout for the "average person"? Perhaps a 3 day timeout? So 258000 seconds?
And then increase some other metrics in the game to speed it up?
What I'm really after here is how to get more players interested in LongTurn. At the moment, single-player is significantly more popular than LongTurn on Freeciv-web.

Well, single-player will always be more popular than multiplayer because people like their safe environment.. for some reason... And it will absolutely and always be much more popular than LongTurn because LT requires a long-term commitment and you know people and long-term commitments ;)

Simply, SP and LT are aimed at different types of people and the SP type may be more numerous than the LT type.

All that said, what do you base your conclusions on? For example, that SP is really more popular? Number of games or number of DIFFERENT players that play them? Also, why do you think that "it could be difficult for most people to commit to playing every day"? I see no logic in this. The three-days-per-turn game will be even less current. Besides, PBM is effectively that. I know that I definitely wouldn't be interested in three-day turns. And I don't think metrics can be stretched much further. x3 movement is already dangerously close to the line where whoever gets online first has a clear advantage (because he can move, attack and/or escape).

Yeah, even longer turns with even greater movement doesn't sound too viable. I think a day per turn is enough; most MMOs (and this kind of is one) give you some kind of bonus if you log in daily, so I see no reason to make it tighter than that. We need to draw the line somewhere, because while some people might not be able to log in daily, they can use the GOTO command and worklists, whereas others of us wouldn't like it as much if it was even slower-paced. As it is right now, I've got my settlers turned into cities and my workers occupied with tasks they do on their own, so the only things I really need to do is exploring, reading the chat and making sure a certain neighbor of mine isn't trying to conquer my cities. The beginning of the game is extremely slow, making it even slower wouldn't really be doing certain ones of us a favor.
Really, I thing we should give it some time and then, when the game is up and running, show people what it's like in the late game when you actually have stuff to do. If we can get a proper atmosphere, the players will become interested.

Re: Game 2 - testing game

Post by Alien Valkyrie »

Well, with the game being terminated, it seems the Sasake incident is over for good. However, no one got the satisfaction of finally wiping him out, and the diplomatic situation after the World War was pretty hazy. So, after over four months, it's not clear who actually won the game. I don't have access to all players' scores, and even then, scores don't mean everything (since, in fact, a few days ago, when I last checked, Sasake was still #1).

For those of us who are unhappy about the game's termination, there are essentially two things to do now:
Firstly, joining the newly-started Game 8 and hoping that it doesn't get prematurely terminated, or secondly, trying out longturn.org, an experienced community of dedicated Freeciv Longturn players. Playing there is not possible from just a web browser (or a mobile device, for that matter), but requires a proper Freeciv client (which also has a lot more features than the web client, and allows you to install modpacks and do all sorts of wacky stuff). I'd recommend the GTK+ client, if your operating system supports it.
