Celts everywhere!
All these flags and symbols are scaled to 'nationx.large'
Playing the new release freeciv 2.4.0-RC1 I came across these five similar flags:

These flags are used respectively by the Gauls, the Celts, the Britons, the Belgic and the Helvetti. They all have celtic origins in various degrees.
* Gauls did have this symbol in a very, very minor way.
* Celtic have it right. They are the ones who should have this symbol and flag.
* Britannia never had this symbol since the name refers to a female person that personifies Great Britain. This flag is used by the Britons.
* Belgic also have very little celtic blood in them.
* Helvetti were hardly considered celtic altough some tribes did have celtic connections. Since the birth of the federation, they have always used the white cross on a red backgroud.

Yet, there are many other celtic symbols. Here are some of them.

So my sugestions would be to:
Both Nations and Flags should have the same name.
* Celts (or Celtic) are good as is. The word 'Celts' is better.
* Bretons should have their symbol and flag. They could use their breton name 'Breizhiz' as to differenciate from 'Britons'. Their flag is the modern 'Breizhiz' flag.
* Gauls could use the Rooster symbol, not official but used since Julius Cesar's time. But the 'Wallonos' already do.
* Britannia flag name could be changed to Britons.
* Belgic are problematic. Used an alternate celtic symbol.
* Helvetti could have a somewhat modified flag but retaining their white cross on a red background.

So here is my sugestions:

In addition, the frankish nation uses a symbol -the lily- that altought it did exist in their time, it had no official usage and was geographically restricted to small areas. The 'Francisque' throwing axe could be a more pertinent symbol. The name should be 'Franks' rather than 'Frankish'. Frankish is commonly used as an adjective.
(Would you say Americanish or Americans?. But then we say 'British' and not 'Brits', go figure.)

So here is the four png flags for the francks:

They are 'ready-to-use'. I have been using them. (moderator note -- not after going through the RTF mangle, unfortunately)

Why didn't you just post the whole thing in the post instead of a rich text file?

thank you, mister moderator. Wish I knew how to do that! :o

In the rtf file, the franks flags & shields look ok to me...

In the moderator's version, the frankish flags & shields are useless. So it's better to download the rtf file?

While playing with the frankish nation with the new 'francs' flags & shields, I noticed that the background was too similar to the game's ocean's blues.
So here are those flags & shields, slightly modified, with a new, lighter blue.
