Andreas, "emulating" the client on the browser is new technology and it's not really emulation but actually running it. There are many ways to implement stuff and webassembly is one of the latest ones.

So.. If the native client is older tech and the js based web version new tech then the wasm based Freeciv client running on the browser should be considered the latest tech.

Fciv.net is focusing on improving 3D using the Three.js 3D engine, and it's the only web client with a 3D focus now.

It's great if you are focusing on 3D graphics. Freeciv21 also has some plans towards 3D stuff but it will take more time before that is available to the players.

My intention was to comment on how old the technologies used for each branch are and how that affects the viability of the variants. Older technology, by default, doesn't equal to worse or obsoleted as we know of the popularity of Unix and Unix-like operating systems.

The good with fciv.net is that it's more compatible with the freeciv.org version. What you might want to deal with is giving attribution to every single author. By default. I believe doing this would be the way AGPL is intended to be used.
