FREECIV LONGTURN / WEB COMMUNITY ADDRESSBOOK

Post by Corbeau »

EDIT: Here is a new and improved addressbook:

https://longturn21.blogspot.com/p/freec ... sbook.html
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here I will try to maintain a list of all websites and variants available on the internet outside Freeciv.org. Feel free to contribute data, I will append this post with any new information that comes in.

Longturn.net
* oldest (est. 2003) active persistent multiplayer community
* games are desktop client only.
* inventor of the Longturn variant
* has its own forum

FreecivWeb.org
* features longturn, play-by-email, single-player and open free-for-all games
* games are Web-only

Freeciv.xyz
* features longturn, play-by-email, single-player and open free-for-all games
* all games are both web-based and desktop-client accessible (the client is 3.0, so experimental, but not too complicated to get running; instructions are here)

fcw.movingborders.es
* temporary/unofficial/private; by the words of the owner, "a pet project and no one should depend on it being alive tomorrow"
* Web-only: single-player, multiplayer FFA and PBEM (no large-scale longturn)

Discord channels:

"League of Civs" - a community server, open for all imaginable topics regarding any of the games and servers out there

The "official" Longturn Discord server - channel for discussions regarding Longturn and its wide array of evolving rulesets

Freeciv Web - server for discussions related to Freeciv Web server; mentioning and linking other servers and games is forbidden and posts can be deleted

* LongTurn Blog - information nexus with stuff and stuff and stuff
* Longturn Discord server; real-time chatting, discussing, quarrelling, trolling, gaslighting...

This is a poor overview of the Freeciv-web services!

First of all, you forgot https://fcw.movingborders.es/.
GitHub repo: https://github.com/lonemadmax/freeciv-web.

Secondly, listing longturn.org FIRST in a thread overview of Freeciv-web services, in the Freeciv-web subforum, is just plain Spam! Longturn.org is not Freeciv-web!

Finally, freeciv.xyz doesn't publish it's source code in a single public repository, in the same way as the other Freeciv-web instances. It's a GPL / AGPL license violation. By not publishing the source code of Freeciv.xyz, you are at least not following good open source participation ways of sharing and contributing back to the community. Further, freeciv.xyz doesn't maintain and improve Freeciv-web itself, it's just Freeciv-web with desktop client bolted on in a horrible and user-unfriendly way.

So for now: https://www.freecivweb.org/ is the only true Freeciv-web service!

Firstly, Movingborders is a semi-private thing that I was under the impression the owner doesn’t want to go completely public. Did you ask him about it before publishing the link?

Secondly, what does a code repository have to do with the community? It’s a code repository, not a game nor communication service.

Thirdly, your opinion about game instances other than yours is freely given, but please take your ego wars elsewhere.

By not sharing the source code of Freeciv.xyz, you are violating the GPL / AGPL. Freeciv should be free and open source! In it's current form, Freeciv.xyz is a proprietary closed-source fork of Freeciv-web, which doesn't improve Freeciv-web further. Richard Stallman of the Free Software Foundation would never approve of Freeciv.xyz!

So for now: https://www.freecivweb.org/ is the only true Freeciv-web service!

So maybe you should write him a letter.

Anyway, this is an addressbook, not a court memo deciding who is right and who is wrong. It is supposed to make a list of places where people can play and communicate. Not everything will fit everybody and, anyway, nobody can play all the games at once. People are free to choose according to their preferences.

About the code thing,I am not into technical details. I was under the impression everything already is public code and that freeciv.xyz doesn’t even have its own particular features that would need to be shared. I hope someone who is more into technical details will clarify

It's relevant to share the development practices and sharing of source code of each Freeciv-web instance:

https://www.freecivweb.org/ is the only true Freeciv-web service. Developed completely open source on GitHub. The web interface is actively maintained.

freeciv.xyz is another Freeciv-web instance, where the complete source code is not available in one repository on GitHub. This is not in accordance with the Gnu General Public license. Their improvements are not published. So this is proprietary closed source software.

Funny, I just heard a rumour that stuff was shared to Githum and that Andreas, after whining that things are not being shared, deleted the shared stuff and closed that particular instance for further contributions. But that can't be true because it would be completely insane, right?

There can be multiple Freeciv-web services, for example https://freecivweb.org, freeciv.xyz and more. The main freeciv-web repository on GitHub should be generic, and shouldn't be specific to one particular Freeciv-web instance. Changes to the generic Freeciv-web repo must be proposed using GitHub pull request.

freeciv.xyz needs to publish it's source code in a separate repository on GitHub.

That's assuming it does not use "upstream" freeciv-web as is. Freeciv-web/desktop client interoperation has been development goal (and in development) of freeciv.org for years.
