How do I learn how to play this?

I've played Civ V before (a long time ago) and had no trouble. Wanted to get back into a Civ game and found this. However, I'm a bit lost with the controls and figuring out strategy. I watched some Let's Play videos on youtube, but they weren't a lot of help. I set my workers to build some roads, but the seem to do nothing turn after turn. I started a game, and randomly picked up some random legion unit from god knows where in the early turns and have no idea what to do with it. Is there a good way to wrap my head around this game? Thanks!

Was there a "build road" icon on your workers? Or did you set them to build roads automatically? Automation doesn't work too well here, you should do it manually.

I've tried both ways and I do see the icon above their head, but nothing happens. Maybe it takes a ton of turns to build roads, maybe you can't build them on certain tiles, I'm not sure.

There's tons of stuff I'm trying to wrap my head around, though. You just kinda start this game in the deep end. I remember being pretty good at Civ V back in the day, but it was so long ago, I have to relearn how to play Civ from scratch.

Among othr thhings, middle-click gives info on the tile, unit and how many turns are left for work completion. It usually takes 1-2 turns to build a road on Grass/Plains. More on hills, much more on mountains, obviously.

Use Civilization tab extensively. Learn the F keys.

Get to Monarchy.

Do you know any general guides that run through explanations of the "components" so I know what I'm working with? I looked through the help file and a lot of the info was vague.

Also, with the city view, I notice that you can choose squares around you that now have stats (production/trade/something else). And you can click to activate them, but not all of them (and seemingly only one). So, if I have a coal mine and a silk thing within range of the city, I can select one and something like a 2/1/1 multi-colored box will pop up. Is there a way to tap into all the resources surrounding a city? Thanks.

You said you played Civ 5. Is it that much different from this? This is the basic Civ 1-2-3 emulation, I thought further sequels weren't that different from the originals.

You work as many non-centre city tiles as your city has population points. When you build a city, it gains resources from the central tile and +1 additional tile. When the city grows to 2, you get another tile etc.

The third number is Trade. You split it to Tax, Science and Luxury with Ctrl-T (usually you don't need Luxury until you get Republic or Democracy - USUALLY). The window is also available from the Civilization menu.

You can check city food/growth under "Granary" (different from the city improvement/building of the same name).

Yes, use middle mouse button, not in the city window but on the normal view.
City window is used to assign population to work on certain tiles (it is assigned automatically in optimal way, but you may want to tweak this,
for example sacrifice city growth for higher production).

I have been reading the manual within the game, but I often have random small questions that the manual doesn't cover. I guess I have to keep experimenting and hope I figure things out that way.

The discord servers that Corbeau gave is also a great community of FC players, some who have been playing for a very long time. Its a fun game, glad you are trying it out.
