Trouble loading 2.5.5 savegame into 2.5.6

You can get help here if Freeciv doesn't start on your computer, or if you keep getting fatal errors while playing etc.

Trouble loading 2.5.5 savegame into 2.5.6

Post by ironclad »

(split from 2.5.6 announcement thread --JTN)

Thanks. Can one continue using old 2.5.5 savegames or could this lead into some issues?

That will be fine. Savegames are always compatible between minor versions (e.g. 2.5.5 and 2.5.6), in both directions. (Savegames are also almost always usable over a major version upgrade, e.g. 2.4.x to 2.5.x, although you can't downgrade (e.g., load a 2.5 savegame into 2.4).

Hi JTN,

unfortunately it does not load my 2.5.5. save games. Nothing happens when I select a save game and click 'ok'. I have attached an example save game.

I can load that savegame into my 2.5.6 build (freeciv-gtk2 client, or standalone server) without trouble.

Can you try loading a savegame into a standalone server and see whether it says anything?

You presumably built 2.5.6 yourself. Had you built 2.5.5 yourself? Is it possible they were built with different options, such as different support for compression formats (e.g., .bz2)?

We really ought to handle that case better... glad it's sorted for you.
