Stable release 2.5.3

2.5.3 is a new bugfix release. It's mainly to fix some problems for distribution maintainers rather than end users, but a couple of other selected fixes have been pulled in too. See the full list of changes.
Source code is available in the usual place. Compiled Windows packages aren't available yet, but should follow shortly; we'll post again here when they turn up.
