gna.org shutdown

Post by JTN »

gna.org, which hosts much of Freeciv's project infrastructure (but not this forum), is expected to shut down soon, possibly by the end of April.

The Freeciv project will continue, and we're currently making alternative arrangements. Downloads are already moved, and freeciv.org infrastructure such as the website and metaserver are unaffected, so players should not be affected much.

However, we do expect some interruption to our project/development infrastructure used by contributors (code version control, ticket tracking, and mailing lists); migration is in progress as time permits, but there's a good chance that we won't have finished before gna.org goes away. However, all important project data is already backed up, so any hiatus should be temporary. (We are taking this opportunity to migrate version control from Subversion to Git.)

We'll post more details to this thread as we finalise them. (Please take any discussion or suggestions to the general discussion forum, not this thread.)

Freeciv-dev and freeciv-i18n mailing lists are now hosted at freelists.org. To subscribe, visit https://www.freelists.org/list/freeciv-dev for freeciv-dev, and https://www.freelists.org/list/freeciv-i18n for freeciv-i18n.

The freeciv-announce mailing list is now also on freelists.org. To subscribe, visit https://www.freelists.org/list/freeciv-announce. (Unlike the previous two lists, we haven't attempted to re-subscribe everyone to this one.)

It took a little longer, but gna.org shut down permanently on May 24.

For source code, I'm still lovingly polishing the Subversion->git migration, so we will be without the ability to submit new code or check out existing code for at least a few days.

I don't seem to have mentioned it here, so: all new bug reports should now go to the new issue tracker at Hostedredmine.

The source code repository is now published on Github: https://github.com/freeciv/freeciv

For more detail, see the freeciv-dev post.

Well, let's hope the transition will be more or less painless.

I should have said before: this migration is now essentially over and everything is more or less up and running. From the website:
16th July 2017 - The migration of project infrastructure from gna.org (which closed down on May 24) is now mostly complete. Source code is hosted on Github, bugs are tracked at Hostedredmine, and mailing lists are hosted at freelists.org. There are still rough edges; please bear with us.
