Freeciv-Web voting system

Post by Schwartz »

In the post-Andreas future, we need an effective voting system. Discord is too limited practically and communally. Corbeau and Darkdusk both have two productive decisions which we should offer up to the community.

Corbeau has established this Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1613410445402367/

Darkdusk suggests Strawpoll.me: https://www.strawpoll.me/

Strawpoll can be embedded here in the Forum or inside Discord. Probably with the correct plugin, a Facebook status could also be embedded in the Forum (and anyway it's easy to post a link). Here are the pros and cons as I see them, people may of course add, dispute or correct me in the replies.

PROS: Facebook limits voting according to profile, Strawpoll according to IP address.

CONS: Facebook, requires potentially revealing a player's true identity. Strawpoll does not close polls which makes it vulnerable to ex post facto vote-tampering, so screen-capping results by a certain deadline will be necessary. Facebook is less vulnerable to vote-tampering.

This is ironic to say, but the community should vote about which platform we should use. I have *cough created this Strawpoll survey (thereby revealing my preference/bias in the subject): https://www.strawpoll.me/15217053

Everyone, please cast your vote by next Tuesday 17:00 UTC!

QUICK UPDATE

Haup suggests purpose-specific Google forms.

Also, I don't think Discord is an effective space for community-wide voting. It works for very quick decisions, but not big ones. I absolutely agree with Corbeau that community issues should be done here inside the Forum.

Therefore, to be clear: although we are choosing different voting platforms, these will always either be embedded within or linked to from the Forum. So, the Forum will remain the center of activity.

Countdown to the end of the poll!

It is almost UTC 11:00 right now, which means six hours remain.

All that said, it would be very nice if polling was enabled on this forum, as is the case in most other PHPBB forums. I asked about it a few times in the past, but was never dignified with an answer.

Even if I missed the deadline, it seems that this topic is still pertinent.
I agree with @Corbeau, this site is the right place for all kinds of voting.

THE RESULTS ARE IN!

I have screen-capped the results as of 17:00 UTC, because Discord and Strawpoll do not stop collecting votes. These screen-caps should therefore be considered final:

Please note that this is an American-style democracy, not a Belgian-style one, in the sense that those who vote get to influence policy. There are no mandatory elections, no penalties for not submitting ballots... :?

Consequently, the Strawpoll website will be the platform by which the community votes on issues, with Discord providing a non-binding back-up system. :D

Personally, I think Corbeau and Arbogast are absolutely right, the Forum should be the center for community life and hence also for polling (and I voted that way). Discord is not for everybody, especially those who prefer (in the apt description of Mooreinstore) a "chess-like" Freeciv experience.

So, it would be awesome if the Working Group inside the New Freeciv-Web server on Discord could devise a way to conduct polls here in the Forum, even if it is just by embedding Strawpoll. :geek:

OPTIONS FOR COMMUNITY LIFE ON DISCORD

A reminder to those new to the present situation. Unfortunately, Freeciv-Web is down in large part due to problems in administration and management. JTN has provided an overview here: http://forum.freeciv.org/f/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=89933

Three servers on Discord are picking up the pieces, and a "Working Group" has been established in one of them to rebuild and relaunch Freeciv-Web. We are also discussing new ways of organizing, financing and supporting Freeciv-Web in the future. This poll was the first big step toward that (thank you to Corbeau for raising the issue and thank you to Bajabaja for organizing the poll on Discord).

For those in the community who would like to be on Discord and participate in these activities, here are the key links:

The New Freeciv-Web server (home of the Working Group): https://discord.gg/Cc8wxpk.

The Longturn.org server: https://discord.gg/B95Fz5c.

A mixed Discord server of Freeciv-Web and Longturn.org users, which is also a general hangout spot: https://discord.gg/8M4WUJB.
