ALT+ "right click" to navigate map - now creates a red highlight box

This recently cropped up:

I used to move around the map by ALT+"right click" on a section of the displayed map, and it would recenter on that location.

Now it creates a red selection box, that I can't seem to get rid of:

I'm on a chromebook.

Thanks for the ctrl-s quick save.

Also, I don't see a way to turn co2 into rock to reduce the carbon footprint and reduce pollution...ha ha

This is happening to me, too, except it happens on every kind of click. I haven't yet figured out how to make it go away and it's very annoying.

I am using Chrome on OSX 10.11.4

I recently added support for selecting units by using the right mouse button to select units on the map. I think this is like the Freeciv desktop clients. To move the map to a different you can right click on a tile.

I will try to improve this. Does anyone have any suggestion about how to fix this?

From the Help menu it says that to select an area, you use Left Button and Drag (not ALT).
From some other list of commands, it says that Right Button unselects the area. It doesn't work with me but the space bar does the trick.
This is from the desktop client.

Andreas, you say: "To move the map to a different you can right click on a tile." Seems like there is a word missing (different what?)

I have released a new version, where this has been somewhat improved. Please let me know what you think of this update. I really want to make this improvement in agreement with the players. If you think that the way things were before was better, then I can change this feature.

Freeciv-web now behaves like the other Freeciv clients:
-Right click on the map to scroll to that map position.
-Right-click-and-drag to select units by area.

I have updated the documentation to reflect this. Please let me know what you think of this change now.

Andreas, thanks for the follow up.

The problem has not gone away.

Just to clarify:

I'm using the web client on a chromebook with the latest Chrome OS and Chrome browser.

In the past, to shift the center of the map, I would:
1) locate the mouse pointer in the main map display to a new location
2) press the ALT key + mouse pad click
3) The "main" game map would recenter on the new new location.

Now, when i perform the above I get a red selection box that will not go away, even after end-turn.

Thanks again,

I just checked all this in an ongoing game (v2.6.0).
With right click & drag, I get a yellow box with everything in it selected.
With right click or Alt right click moves the whole map.
And my point: the Space Bar unselects everything.

OK, it could be me and I'm a unique freak (occurrence).

I installed a bunch of extensions, prior to the issue, and then disabled them to no effect.

I'll sit tight without my freeciv fix for a week to see if other users have the same problem.

I could really use a freeciv fix, so I might just jump the gun and do a factory reboot for my chromebook.

Arbogast: I have released an update so that the spacebar will clear the unit selection. Thanks for reporting this!

buzman: I hope that I have fixed this problem also. The Chromebook has a special way to right-click using the Alt-key and mouse pad clicking. I don't have a Chromebook to test it on, so it would be great if you could please test it again. The mouse click has to take less than 400 millisecond to activate map scrolling. If the right-click-and-drag takes more than 400 milliseconds, then the red unit selection rectangle will be shown.

Please give this update a try. I will continue improving the unit controls until you are all happy. 8-)

Houston, we still have an adjustable red box selection problem.

Thanks for attempting to fix.
