LT70 - continents at war (or peace)

Post by wieder »

LTX based game starting in early 2022 once we have enough players. Teamless, continents, more rivers and semi rough terrain. Poles enabled. More than one continent.

Join here and play with the Freeciv 2.6 native client!

LTX is the development version of the LTT (Longturn Traditional) ruleset and includes new improvements, units and even the City State government for those who have very little land at the start, All of the new features are designed to allow strategies familiar from the actual the human history but not that easily implemented on a regular Freeciv game. The early game is accelerated compared to standard games and the players may be able to build the first new city at T5-T7. While the gameplay remains familiar the actual games usually end in 80-120 turns depending on the player skills. The tech tree has some additional techs meaning that if the game is very competitive it's possible to play for a longer time.

No other ruleset outside longturn.net allows this many ways of playing while actually making it possible to win with the strategy of your choice.

This game also has new stuff that's not only reflecting the history from Europe or US. A Chinese port from the ancient ages, the School of Baudhayana sutras and the soon to be announced wonder that's definitely not from US or Europe. Stay tuned to see what that will be.

This game also brings back actual battles of the ancient times. No more just attacking the cities and fortified bases but instead the players need to decide how to handle those ancient armies moving through the enemy lines, siege units able to win the battles, protected by both offensive and defensive units. Now the actual logistics matter even in the early game.

Speaking of scouting, there are an entire class of ships made just for scouting. Small ships able to investigate and travel where the big ships can't go. If you like naval warfare and exploration, this is what you want to have. The scouts warning you from enemy attacks and your own scouts able to check the area before you go in.

All this new stuff means that the players have not found all the strategies and if you figure out a new way to do things, you may get some serious advantage because of that. The old strategies work but are no longer the only options.

This game now has a start date and it's Feb 10th.

Multiple continents will be lots of fun on a map where the players can utilize the new scout ship class naval units. This brings a new aspect to war and peace. Your big ships, military and transport, can go only so far without running out of the resources. You may build naval bases to extend your range - or maybe restock your supplies on an allied city - but if this is not an option you can still map the unknown with the scout ships. Those are able to reach even the furthest locations bringing you some valuable intel. The scout ships can't carry units and are unable to attack. This makes them not an immediate threat but a tool for diplomacy and a way to expand your knowledge of the world.

Do you like small wonders? LT70 features some small wonder like units you can utilize to make your empire prosper. For example, you can expand your fleet of frigates with the flagship frigate unit. It's faster, more powerful and the ultimate ship of the era. Your enemies will need to worry if they spot your flagship frigate unit next to their cities. Especially if it's loaded with the unique medieval navy troops unit.

Lots of nice units, city improvements and other stuff. One thing is however missing. We don't have tons of special rules for how the game works. Almost everything happens like you would expect this stuff to work on a regular game. The differences happen mostly for tech trading. Now fair with no popularity contest is it usually is. In most games with tech trading on there are few big alliances trading techs and everyone else left out from those will fall back on techs and become obsolete & conquered. This time you can trade techs with special tech trading units. It's not free, not for every situation and not something you have to do to win the game.
