New governments for the future games?

Post by wieder »

We are currently running two games at longturn.org. One with more traditional ruleset and one with more experimental features. Not really experimental but with lots of features and ideas not found on traditional games.

There is also a new government. Nationalism. There the player loses control of most of the tax rates since the max is 50%. The player however is able to get trade bonus usually only with democracy or republic.

To give more options top the players, there is a plan to introduce a new government on the next more experimental game. The current candidates are Socialism, Feudalism and maybe Confederation.

The question is if anyone knows about other games / rulesets with new governments? Might be a good idea to take a look on those before adding the new ones for longturn.org games.

Presumably you found Federation in civ2civ3, you could also check out Tribalism in this ruleset. I can't tell how good, bad, or ugly it is, my one and only attempt with civ2civ3 was an unmitigated disaster.

I already said this elsewhere, but no harm in repeating, for the record: I think that the game has overgrown current government system and adding more different governments won't add much. What I'd like to see is some combination of systems, like in Alpha Centauri, where you can combine economy: Planned, Free, whatever, with political system: Democracy, Totalitarian (or a spectrum), with mentality: Collectivism, Individualism, maybe add something else, and possibly some wonders that would work only for specific governments.

I tried implementing stuff through Range: Player improvements, but it seems that a city improvements can work only on a city, not for a while nation (the bonus of a city improvement over a Wonder is that you can remove and rebuild it later).
