Admin(s) behaviour and the Freeciv community in general

For the record, yesterday I posted information about LT39 and LT40 on Freeciv Discord server.

Today the information is gone. Since I don't believe in such system glitches, the only explanation I can find is that it has been deleted by an admin (there are more admins there). The only conclusion I can make from this explanation is that it is forbidden to inform players of LT games on Freeciv Web servers.

Now I wonder what will happen if I share the information in the Freeciv Web in-game chats.

If my reasonong is false or I have false information, feel free to correct me.

I'm not really commenting on about the rules on promoting LT games elsewhere since that's obviously the decision for other people.

However if you do that, please mention that the LT games need an actual native client for playing the games. Some people familiar with the web interface might not know that and try to join the game with a browser. Unfortunately this can't be done for longturn.org games.

On longturn.org you are welcome to mention about other games and ways to play this great game. It's not a competition but a choice to play the way that suits you. Once the new games, LT39 and LT40 begin, there will be months before a new game the players could join. Meanwhile people can start playing with the web multiplayer if they want to play and have missed the games that are already running. There could be idler spots people can fill but the actual new games are most likely not started for a while.

The next game after LT39 and LT40 will (probably) be ScenarioGame 2 (SG2) that will most likely take place on WW1 setup. My guess is that it might start in January 2018 at the earliest but could take a bit longer to set up. This game will also need lots of changes to the ruleset if we want to have proper WW1 experience. The work on the ruleset has not even began yet.

The LT41 might be a team game with two teams and this just might start in the summer of 2018. LT41 possibly has a traditional ruleset similar to LT39. LT42 might start in autumn 2018 while LT41 is running and could be teamless with a ruleset evolved from LT40.

Nothing is carved on stone but this should give you idea about how the games on longturn.org may start in the future. In any case there will be times when no games are about to start for a while. We have no resources or players for something like starting a new game every month :)

For the record; Discord server was never discussed or agreed with freeciv team, so it's more of a one person's server than official freeciv server. Especially, freeciv team has not been setting policies for the server.

How LT plans to move rulesets to 2.6, once there's stable release? Do you plan to update your current ruleset to 2.6 format, or to reimplement your changes on top of some 2.6 ruleset?

As cazfi said, this isn't an official Freeciv Discord server, but actually just the Freeciv-web Discord server. Freeciv-web isn't part of the Freeciv Project, it just bases itself on Freeciv's codebase.

Yes, the discord server is for Freeciv-web. The invitation link is also very clear that this is a Freeciv-web discord server. The original announcement on the Freeciv-web forum post also had Freeciv-web written all over it. It was created because it was something the players of Freeciv-web requested.

By the way, it is a very nice Discord server. I hereby invite more people join it! :D

The Freeciv 2.6...

No plans for migrating to 2.6 have been made yet. However I guess we will take the easiest route, whatever that is. At the moment it feels like converting the current rulesets to 2.6 would be the way to go. However if this is not recommended or there are some issues with it, it might be possible to take a base ruleset and implement the features to it. We have a reasonably usable version history for the changes, even while it's not really a perfect one.

It took some time before we switched from 2.3 to 2.5, skipping 2.4 for some reason(s). I imagine that the switch to 2.6 might happen sooner than the last switch. However never say never.

I any case the LT games have *lots* of ruleset changes and whatever the migration route is, it will take some time to do that. It's the curse and blessing of having something that's not standard :)

I suppose 3.0 will take much more time once 2.6 is completed so there is probably no reason to skip 2.6 and do only 3.0. In any case 2.6 has some nice features we could really use for longturn.org games.

Yes, it's probably easier to update the ruleset by blindly following http://freeciv.wikia.com/wiki/How_to_up ... 2.5_to_2.6 (shouldn't take many hours with any ruleset) than to try to roll changes from not-perfect version history, at the same time trying to figure out what's the way to do each change in 2.6.

About a year ago I wrote something about 50 hours. Meanwhile with an apparently working ruleset I think 200h is more realistic, but admittedly this includes the time to learn Lua from scratch and overwrite default.lua signal handlers in script.lua just to see how stuff works.

50h or 200h?

The LT40 ruleset is currently the most complex one used on longturn.org games but there are really no lua scripts or stuff like that. For most parts it's just customized .ruleset files.
