If disbanded inside a city, half their shield cost is recycled into the current production. If disbanded in the fields, they're just gone.

Thank you for your answer!
How to know if there are any risk of they disband units such as ships, settlers, and soldiers when they are traveling?

If you disband a ship, the units in it will sink. Maybe they'll try to hop on another ship or the coast first, but not sure.

If there are spare ships on the tile where the disbanded ship is, they will board it, otherwise they are lost even just near the coast. Btw if you play with a king unit ("k" in the starting set) the king will never sink this way, will escape to the nearest city. Also, rockets are not lost with a submarine, they can fly to a city or airbase during the turn
If you are about involuntary disbanding, watch out the cities that are low on gold/food/shields (whatever your government upkeeps units with). Units will get disbanded for gold only if during the city processing (cities are processed turn end in a random order) you appear to have negative gold and the city has no buildings that it can possibly sell.
F4 dialog greatly helps in maintaining your cities!

My concerning is precise involuntary disbanding because this happen without they warning some turns previously.
