Why was the maximum map size reduced from 18 to 10?

Is that on freeciv-web (on play.freeciv.org) or regular desktop freeciv?

This was reduced so that the server resources are more fairly shared among the players. A very large map will take up a lot of server CPU resources. You can use this command to set the map size in pregame: /set size 18
