At longturn.org we use tiremes to navegate rivers wich is good and realistic form of moving troops on rivers. What is missing is a modern form of tireme that is able to succeed it with much better abilities. I particularly liked this "Marinefährprahm" MPF since it is bigger than the WWII landing craft we all know from D-day and seems to have better defense and overall seems to be more sturdy. A successor of this WWII landing craft could be a hovercraft.

From game mechanics point of view trireme was made the only one able to navigate on the rivers. On longturn.org games that is. The reasoning was that in the ancient days there were less obstacles on the rivers. It also didn't feel right to let the transports to have a very far away reach and also being able to travel on the rivers. Effectively also neutralizing restrictinfra. Same with triremes but as those are much slower the effect is not that massive.

Maybe some kind of smaller landing ship might do the trick but it would probably need new graphics. Shorter range when on rivers, maybe?
