Intro graphics

Post by cazfi »

We used to have competition for new intro graphics for each major release. Current graphics were first introduced to 2.2, so we already have had them in three releases; 2.2, 2.3, and 2.4. Is there interest to create new one for 2.5 or at least 2.6?

I think the current dimensions of 510x300 are good for most use, though we may need to scale it down when porting to some devices.

The intro is nice, please keep it as is. Maybe related, I'm working on a tweaked Map2oil variant of Amplio2, originally planning to get a hex. version, because I didn't know that Amplio2hexbig and others already exist. My new plan is an Amplio+Amplio2 mix (works for 2.4 with new 2.5 stuff backported) and a version scaled down for situations when I'm willing to switch the tileset temporarily to see a bigger part of the map. For this business I use a copy of the intro PNG with a tileset info (text) in its upper right corner. There is another special PNG (radar), allegedly used in the place of the mini-map, but I've never seen it in action with the GTK2 Windows client.

A small edition of the intro PNG is used as icon (defined in misc/icons.spec). This can be used as placeholder for a new tech a.civilzation in experiments, e.g., I tested "cryptography" with pre-requisites "espionage" and "theology" in an experiment to collect all dead ends (theology is the first dead end, espionage the third.) But it messed up the tech tree, and I dropped this idea for now.
