Augmented2 test gameplay

Post by Wahazar »

Not sure where to post it, but this place seems to be ok for reports about my final test game with augmnted2 modpack.
Game is running on server, so no cheating, 11 AI with various difficulty levels (most of them Hard) vs me, playing Vistulans.
You can also join and observe current state of the game (server is announced on metaserver)
This is longturn version of augmented2 ruleset, movement x2 and more strict limits of empire size.

At the beginning 5 Tribes and one Canoe started to check surroundings and make first settlements:
Image

Unfortunately canoe didn't found any foreign land before 10 turns and was disbanded.
What is worse, one tribe died before reach suitable place for a new town, but Krak found friendly mercenaries in one hut.
Also boundary of Norwegian neighbor was discovered in the South (did earth poles swapped?)
Image

These boundaries give asumpt to set Warrior Code as a research target.
It is not possible to seize enemy city with small units such Tribe or Militia, Warrior Code allow Skirmisher as a first fully offensive unit.
Gold and Science income is suppressed under Tribal gov., thus 6 cities yield only 2 research point with maximum of 60% science tax rate:
Image

Krak wasted some time searching good spots for towns, thus after 15 turns I was on 10th place of population, but first for Land Area (killunhomed is in use here to restrict such strategy :)

After 20 turn, in 5000 BCE, Krak started to make some Dirt Roads for faster transport and trade income, new Canoe and few Hunters was ready for exploration, and construction of first Infantry Barracks started. Last upkeep-free Tribe was about to set their foot on the ground.
Image

In next 10 turns Warrior Code was almost gained, and Shamanism was a next target. With 7 towns, 2 more settlements would cause additional unhappiness. Krak also discovered another neighbor on the western peninsula:
Image

While further exploring, Krak discovered in 4000 BCE that his neighbor Pereira have settlements on both westbound long peninsulas.
Did he hopped between them using his canoe, or their are connected elsewhere? Krak sent Canoe with Tribe to catch some strategic points, and push it further with Archers to continue exploring:
Image

After 50 turn Krak was ready to expand his properties. City Stavanger had gates widely opened, and important resources nearby:
Image

At this moment, Vistulan were third in population ranking and with only 12b/t, fourth in science. Time to get Alphabet to make some embassies.

In 3000 year BCE, cease-fire diplomatic agreement between Pereira and Krak was signed. Also Nygaardsvold asked for cease-fire, when his Stavanger was captured by Krak's units. Krak agreed instead of continue war, because with 16 cities it was not easy to maintain additional angry enemy citizens. Beside tis, Stavanger surrounded by Palisade was perfectly located on strategical isthmus:

Far before 70 turn Krak decided, that his capital will be located in newly founded city Stolica, and started building Palace here.
Site was maybe suboptimal, but presence of mountains and forest yield in productivity enough to build vital improvements,
and in future higher radius will give more resources such as Saltpeter or Uranium.
20 cities, some 4 size, were not easy to maintain - most of taxes was used to please angry tribesmen.
Krak started to develop Mysticism and construct Temples instead of Sacred Cairn, which are cheap, but have no Mysticism bonus and doesn't add Culture Points, which are required for Libraries or Courthouses.
Image

Before 2000 BCE, Pereira ignored cease fire and deployed frontal attack on Krak's west outposts: Krzeszowice, Wiślica and Myślenice.
Fortunately, Archers were enough deterrents for Phalanxes, which retreat wounded by arrows, except of one unit, which was bribed and switch sides of Wiślica Palisade:
Image
Meanwhile, Canoe with Tribesmen continued exploring Krzeszowice/Wistula peninsula, which appear to be extraordinary long.

Before 90 turn, Krak's ship discovered separate island! Tribesmen were so eager to step on solid land after long journey, that they immediately
found new town, Szczawnica. It was great mistake, Krak's empire was too large, and people start to riot. There was no clue how to please separatists - any Militia could help, but there was no unit, except Canoe, which was discommissioned, but still it was not possible to buy new Militia during disorder. What is worse, city was located on swamp, so there was no free people to work as comedians - all hands for fishing.
On the other side of this extraordinary-long peninsula things goes also wrong - many veteran Legions attacked Myślenice, and some units were sacrificed to defend this spot, including Tribe unit.

Krak's struggle with Szczawnica disorder lead to Anarchy after 3 turns, but because Palace was already finished and Absolutism was known,
Krak become Despot. Finally it helped quitting city disorders, but such highly centralized government caused very high corruption in far cities such as Szczawnica. Krak ordered to build Courthouse here, but all money and building materials were misspended here.
Additionally, production efficiency was clipped if compared to cities with Tribal Huts.
Meanwhile, Legions of Warlady Pereira protruded deeply into Vistulan territory... Krak spends a huge amount of gold to bribe one of those Legions:
Image

At last, Krak was forced to allow Tribe council to reign again, because corruption and lack of Tribe Hut bonus caused some cities to starve. Fortunately Hanging Gardens in Stolica was ready, which solved problem of overall unhappiness due to high (for Tribal gov) number of cities (24).
Pereira continued threats against Myślenice outpost:
Image

700 year BCE was a definitive end of Tribal era for Vistulan nation - discovery of Bronze Working forced people into mining works and Tribal way of life in harmony with Nature, centered around Tribe Huts was no longer manageable. Towns were suffering famine, thus Krak start preparation to coronation.
Stubborn Pereira continued raids, this time against Krzeszowice lodgement, but Prussian Warlord Friedrich I was more friendly and offered cease fire treaty.

With Monarchy and Bronze Working things started forward vigorously - not only better productivity, but also discovery of Currency allow to increase trade, bronze armored units would be also more persistent against wild Pereira attacks. There was lack of assaulting units, the next step should be Iron Working, to make own Legions, but Krak succumb to whispers of eastern monks and ordered to learn about Vedism and Hindusim.
Coastal statues were founded to encourage sailors to explore open sea...
Image

In 500 year BCE, Vedism was almost learned, but Monk Monastery, which was described by eastern advisers as wisdom radiant, was not possible to be founded due to relatively low Vistulan nation culture (below 600 points, while 1900 requested).
On the other hand, continuation of this patch was Hinduism with knowledge, how to tame Elephants:
Image

After 130 turns, west outpost Szczawnica at least finished building Courthouse and started to grow.
Vistulans were learning about Trade, to help making Wonders. Exclusive sea unit was used to explore other lands and establish embassies with another nations. Border situations was uneasy but stable:
Image

In 1 year CE, Mausoleum of Maosolos was almost ready, and Feudalism was the research goal.
Warlord Pereira was so fixated on attack against Krak's strongholds, that she stopped research and use all taxes to gain gold.
Krak decided to seize large uninhabited land behind Pereira territory.

200 years after heyday of the new faith, Vistulans were still loyal to far east Polytheism and continue learning about Jainism, to be able to tame Elephants even better. However they also become familiar with Monotheism concept.
Meanwhile situation on western front was still stalled. Expedition was sent to seize unclaimed territory on the west side of Pereira, but suddenly enemy Legions emerged from the forest and killed helpless units. Has Warlady Pereira such superior intelligence service?
Image

Herodotus reported, that Vistulans are second most militarized civilizations in the World.
Krak prepared Triremes to search, where is the first one.
Meanwhile he discovered, that Myslenice and Wiślica outposts are on the other side of the long but narrow inland sea, or rather salt lake.
Pereira seized other part of this lake:
Image

Next expedition "Pereira back" was prepared better and soon 2 Triremes were approaching unclaimed land along northern shore. settlers and hardened Pikemen embarked first Trireme, while next one was loaded with Workers and Arbalests, additionally Canoe was transporting Vikings for reconnaissance.
Suddenly, terrified crew of second Trireme noticed cloud of smoke and some debris and dead bodies floating - seems that Pereira's Archers attacked Trireme using fire arrows, ship was burned and all these who didn't drowned immediately, were mercilessly pierced by arrows!
Image

600 years after new Prophet was born, Vistulans started to learn about Christianity. Krak also signed alliance treaty with Prussians and later with Benin, and discovered, that first one from most militarized nations are Basque just south of the Vistulans territory, with war against Prussians. Because Prussians requested help, Krak decided to launch offensive against Norwegian blocking attempt to Prussians. Small area of unclaimed territory between Narvik and Allenstein was excellent to sent settlers protected by Swordsmen and make stronghold here:
Image

Note: because Vistulan territory become huge, I will use trident-like "augmentedis" tileset by now, which show larger territory.

Nice story! Keep it up! :D But to be frank, I prefer 2 screenshots over 1 big trident one. It's hard to spot things on trident. The blue widgets are a bit hard to get used too.

Well then, I will continue with hexemplio tiles, eventually zxoomed out using Qt client option.

When Vistulans learned about Monotheism, Western Wall was founded in Capital city by local sanhedryn - this give not only better defense, but also, thanks to many pilgrimages, increase trade income.

Finally, 800 years after beginning of Christian Era, due to influence of the missionaries, Krak decided to convert to Christianity.
(fun fact: there is coincidence with reality, there are claims that Vistulans were christianised by St. Methodius about 880)

Old pagans Sacred Cairns were toppled and Churches emerged here, but far-east Polytheism have still some strongholds, especially in Sandomierz, where Monk Monastery was planned to be build.

And the most importantly, Pereira at least lost one city, Cacheu:
Image

When 1000 year of CE passed, Vistulans has started to make Banks, and first trade route was established between capital city and Prussian city Elbing. Small contingent (Archers, Galley, Ballista and Trireme) was also sent to help Prussian against Basque and to protect Elbings trade route.

thanks to the Craft Guilds knowledge, Manufacture were build in capital city, as well as in other cities with desert (sand pit add more production to Manufacture, beside overall production boost).

Third attempt to Pereira back-stabbing was finally partially successful - Vistulan troops established Krakow stronghold west of Bissau-Guinean,
but expedition against nearby Bissora town failed - many enemy units were wandering around:
Image

Monarchy government is very centralized - when capital city celebrate, all vassals are sending food tribute, thanks to this capital can grow fast and shine like crown jewel. To catch up medieval era, Vistulan learned about Chivalry and Hastilude.

Because my ally, Prussians, was in state of permanent war with Basques, which was dangerous for Vistulan traderoutes, and sea shipments were tedious and expensive, Krak decided to open land bridge to Prussians. Norwegians, which stucks between, were mercilessly eradicated:
Image

Another two Pereira's cities were besieged: first Satim, as a kind of false flag operation - many troops were sent here to defend,
and then Mansoa as a priority objective.
Meanwhile capital city growth to size of 14. Christian advisers declared, that this new faith would help to keep angry citizens content,
but there is need to make gorgeous chapel with beautiful paintings inside. Unfortunately Vistulans, which were used for centuries for
pagans rituals around Sacred Cairns, or eventually ceremonies around rare Temples, were not enough cultured (3800) to achieve such Wonder.
Therefore Krak ordered building more Amphitheaters, Libraries and Churches, but culture is not a thing to buy immediately, it accumulated slowly...
Image

Around 1170, gathering of great philosophers from far east revealed new invention: Gunpowder. That allows to make new units, Arcebussiers,
which were still not able to pare with Chivalry as Pikemen, but were sometimes better in attack than Swordmen.
Fast research development was also possible, because capital city grows up to its limits and Kraks cuts funding of entertainment in favor
to develop Medicine and Sanitation.
Meanwhile, brave expedition on Longboat discovered new lands, and Vistulan get new Achievement "All your hemisphere mapped".
This boosted overall Culture.
Another trade route was established, to the Benin city of Ikara.
Another Nygaardsvold's city, Narivk, was burned to the ashes:

After successful capturing of Buba town, Krak's troops started to besiege Safim stronghold. Gunpowder era allows to replace primitive ballistas with more effective bombards, which installed on Galleys boards were atacking Safim from both seaside and riverside:
Image

Unfortunately, shock attack against Safim failed, and Krak army was forced to besiege city while waiting for reinforcements and catapults.
Meanwhile Vistulan ally, Friedrich I, went into serious trouble - Dolores Ibarruri units inflitrated deeply into Prussian territory, and small Vistulan contingent in Elbing was desperately trying to survive while keep trade link safe:
Image

Finally, Safim has fallen, but there was only scorched earth.
Krak decided to run other offensive against Gabu and also send some corps to establish link to the Krakov outpost.
Meanwhile, Michelangelo finished his famous and unique paintings in capital city Chapel ceiling and walls...

New important advances were learned: Navigation and Leadership.
Gabu was successfully seized by Krak's army, and it opened way to the far-west outposts.
On the other side, things goes wrong on prussian front - despite of desperate fight of allied forces, Elbing was captured by Basques, which broke trade link to the Vistulan capital:
Image

New east outpost Kielce was founded, far east near Lippian territory.
But high level of corruption and citizens discontent lead
in 1515 into revolution which swept off Monarchy, inefficient for handling such large and vast empire.
Unfortunately, anarchy cut off food and production supplies, famine spreads in many cities and some regiments were disbanded,
including one precious elite Swordsmen.
Which type of government should be used to now?
