I confirm that the AI code shows no sign of understanding the Capturer, Capturable, or Bombarder flags -- it doesn't look for them at all. So yes, it's going to be stupid with them. The AI does have a bodyguard system (aiguard.c), so it might be relatively simple to teach the AI that Capturable unit...

I've raised hrm #762836 for the select.png and grid.png updates, but the grid.png isn't obviously entirely an improvement? The shift of one of the red lines leaves gaps in the outline for me. From 2.6, in the civ2 ruleset, diplomats can act directly from on board ships (at your request; gna #23604).
Other rulesets (including the default) still don't have this rule, but if you want to add it to a custom ruleset, studying the civ2 one should show how it is done.
