Re: Ideas for better online game experience

The top two reasons why people are leaving longturn.org games? The games taking too much time or something unexpected happening too fast in the game. Very few players enjoy a game where someone powerful enough eats them in a turn or two and there is just no hope. For some players this has been the b...

Re: General tech (trading, leak, upkeep, loss) topic

drdogbot7: Something like that might work, but I guess they can't be implemented only with ruleset changes. Would need coding and we have been avoiding pretty much anything requiring new code. It's good to talk about stuff like that because someone might get interested about implementing that one da...

Re: General tech (trading, leak, upkeep, loss) topic

AndreasR: Well... We don't have or use that many patches on longturn.org. I don't even know exactly what patches we use :) akfaew is managing the technical stuff there and I have been tweaking and adjusting the rulesets and managing the settings affecting the games. I'll post the link to this thread...

Re: General tech (trading, leak, upkeep, loss) topic

Just curious. Where could I see the current server settings? Might be interesting to look at the ruleset(s) and the servers settings for the current games. Also, if tech trade didn't prove to be a problem, there may not be reason to remove it. Removing tech trade on longturn.org games is probably a ...

Re: General tech (trading, leak, upkeep, loss) topic

The problem with game speed without tech trading can be solved with sciencebox settings. In longturn.org games the sciencebox and the city improvements have been adjusted so that the best players are able to get the full tech tree around T120-T150. In some games even faster and with some games it ha...

Re: General tech (trading, leak, upkeep, loss) topic

While competitive, the longturn.org games can be quite casual until the late game. There is also gold trade and while not totally free, it usually only has a very small penalty. The penalty there is to prevent front players from giving all the gold to those who can't be attacked. It's still possible...

Re: General tech (trading, leak, upkeep, loss) topic

"Has there ever been a game with significant tech upkeep, root_reqs, tech leak, giving-penalty and receiving-penalty all at the same time? My guess is, no it hasn't." I'm not aware of that kind of game. What we have tried to avoid in longturn.org has been getting tech for free. This has be...

Re: General tech (trading, leak, upkeep, loss) topic

I'm not saying that tech trading is evil :) or something like that. Just that for some game types it may not be the best possible option to be available. It all depends on what type of game you want to create.

Re: General tech (trading, leak, upkeep, loss) topic

In the real world there is no free duplicating of knowledge. You can't simply go to some Indian city with a population of 10 000 people, steal the tech for nuclear weapons from there and then start building nukes as easily as anyone else. An even if there was "free" knowledge in the real w...

Re: Generl tech (trading, leak, upkeep, loss) topic

With 5% probability for losing the tech you could probably just repeat the process as many times as you wish and the receiver would probably get the tech with few tries anyway. The penalty should be symmetric like 50% 50% to be really effective. With 50%/5% it would still be printing free money. The...
