I'm using the following:
This is Freeciv version 3.1.90.3-dev (d8a54ddb6a), gui-gtk-3.22 client.
Built against gtk+ 3.24.29, using 3.24.29
Built against glib 2.68.2, using 2.68.2
Pressing + or - on the numpad or num row does nothing, and the Controls section of the help doesn't mention zoom at all.

The + and - keys don't do anything at all for me on the numpad or main keyboard.

What do you mean? I don't see a +/- option in the GTK client.

Add zoom to the GTK client
I much prefer using the GTK client, but the lack of zoom makes it difficult to see what is going as the game progresses and the screen gets busier.
It would be nice if you could zoom the map. The functionality could probably be implemented the same way other tile-based real-world map tools are.
